A Field Guide to the Future of Work

A Field Guide to the Future of Work

We created digital and print editions of the Field Guide to the Future of Work essay collection for the Future Work Centre at the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA).

The brief called for minimalism, a typographic approach, and a look and feel that wasn’t ‘serious, academic, busy, or fussy’. The aim was to create a design that would stand out alongside typical think tank or research publications, and reflect the eclectic, offbeat tone of the content.

The digital edition was created first, using bold typography and the RSA’s corporate colours in a confident cover design. We worked closely with the team on the layout and flow of copy, reworking a page of statistics to bring greater clarity.

We developed the design further for the print edition, creating an intriguing publication that visually references handbooks and guides from the 1960s and 1970s (another period which witnessed dramatic changes in the workplace) through the brown palette, taped spine, linen effect textured cover and off white paper stock.
