Interactive event Pop Up Pop Up and pop-up book ‘Legend: An A-Z of the Lea Valley’ are projects of the artist Hilary Powell. Calverts popped with pride at being picked to print this piece of bookish wizardry.
Inspired by local voices and stories, ‘Legend’ portrays the ever changing Lower Lea Valley of East London, and the demolition sites of the Olympic fringe in the run-up to London 2012. It was developed in conjunction with the Bartlett School of Architecture, and supported by London Centre for Book Arts.
Printed in black and two pantone colours on our Heidelberg 74 litho press, Cocoon Offset 100% recycled was chosen for the main book and pop-up stock – just the right shade of off-white, and durable enough to take 3 weeks of post print laser cutting.
After cutting, the sheets, covers and endpapers went to Sugarhouse Studios in Stratford, to be assembled by hand at the Pop Up Pop Up event. In a secluded and darkened factory – sometimes with only the glow of bench lamps to guide them – teams of pop up assemblers cut, pasted, popped, pulled, glued and prayed. The finished book has real wow factor – enough to have won the Birgit Skiold award at London Art Book Fair.
