We've just finished printing a beautiful book for the artist and printmaker Paul Caffell, under his 31 Studio imprint.
Paul is a renowned painter in oils, but developed a parallel career making extraordinary photographic prints using the fiendishly complex and demanding platinum technique, in which he and his son Max are acknowledged masters.
The book contains many iconic images of the 1960s, including work from famous photographers such as Bill Brandt and Lee Miller, as well as prints for the likes of the McCartneys and Bryan Adams. The book also contains contemporary work from people like Leah Gordon, who has built a unique and moving portfolio of images from Haiti. Reproducing the richness of platinum prints with litho isn't easy. The pictures were rendered in 4-colour black on 170gsm silk art paper, to capture as many of the originals' subtle sepia and warm black tones as possible. Final colour adjustments were made on press.
