Scamp

A designer's preliminary sketch, before producing a full design visual. Often used in the early stages of a design project, as a way of demonstrating an idea to the client.

Scuffing

Rubbing of dry ink on the finished print. This is sometimes a problem on matt or silk coated sheets, because minute fragments of the coating break away when the paper is handled. It can be mitigated by sealing, varnishing or laminating the sheet.

Sewn binding

In perfect or PUR binding, the spine edges of the folded sections of a book block are ground off before glue is applied and the cover drawn on over the spine. A more durable and elegant finish is achieved with sewn binding, where the folded signatures or sections are literally sewn together with strong thread.

Singer sewing

A method by which sheets are bound using an industrial version of the domestic Singer sewing machine. A variety of patterns and thread colours can be used..

Stitch

To sew, staple or otherwise fasten together by means of thread or wire the leaves or signatures of a book or pamphlet. Wire staples in the spine we call 'saddlestitched'.

Social Enterprise

Calverts is a co-operative social enterprise, or a business with social as well as profit-making aims. In our case, this means providing high quality employment for our members, as well as being a centre of excellence in sustainable printing and communications design.

Sustainability

Calverts focuses on the social, personal, economic and ecological impacts of our business. These are the things by which we measure our performance in terms of sustainability. We are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified printers, and holders of the Green Mark award. In 2007, Calverts will be working towards ISO 14001 accreditation for our design and printing. In addition, The Co-operative Environmental and Social Performance Indicators (CESPIs) will measure how democratic, inclusive, and equitable our business culture is, as well as our waste and carbon impacts, and the quality of our customer service and level of community engagement.
