Film

Film positives and negatives are still used to make lithographic plates, and also dies for effects like foiling, embossing and UV varnishing. Many printers, including Calverts, now have CTP systems which image plates directly from a ripped file, doing away with the need for film, and the developing and fixing chemicals that go with it.

Foiling

Sometimes called 'hot foil' or 'foil blocking', this is the process by which a metallic, clear, patterned, holographic or coloured image is applied in an ultra-thin foil, using heat and pressure from a special die.

Font

Complete set of printed or display characters of the same typeface measured in points (a point being approx. 0.3mm). Fonts used for digital output fall into two categories: PostScript and Truetype. PostScript fonts are comprised of two parts, a font suitcase containing screen fonts (bitmaps of all sizes and styles in a font family) and a printer font (scalable high-resolution outline font). Truetype fonts are scalable, have only one part and can be printed on non-PostScript printers. Calverts asks that when we receive digital artwork, the screen and printer fonts used should also be supplied.

Four-colour process

Colour printing by means of the three subtractive primary colours (cyan, magenta, yellow) and black ('key') superimposed. Also known as 'full colour' or CMYK. Artwork should be supplied to Calverts CMYK rather than RGB.

FSC paper

The Forest Stewardship Council is an international not-for-profit body which promotes and certifies sustainable forest products, including paper. Calverts is an FSC certified printer. This means that if our clients select an FSC paper, we can give them the FSC claim and certificate number in logo form to put on their own publication.

ftp

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is the standard internet protocol for transferring files from one computer to another, and it is the best way of sending and collecting large files such as artwork or pictures. If you have a fast internet connection, Calverts can give you an FTP 'hot button' to sit on your desktop, which you can use to send files to us securely and quickly by simply dragging and dropping the relevant files or folders.
