The Colditz Cock is the name of the name of a glider constructed by two prisoners of war at the infamous Colditz Castle. It's also the name of the first book from the Cartland Institute for Romance Research.

The heroine of this tale of love and derring-do is based on a young Barbara Cartland who was instrumental in the development of the air-towed glider used to transport troops during World War Two.

Published by UHC Collective and printed litho offset by Calverts on 80gsm Arcoprint Edizioni and 260g Trucard Ice.

Quite the most luxurious thing we've printed this year was a brochure for a new apartment development by architectural interior designers Oliver Burns.

Designed by Debi Ani of Oro, The brochure is 340mm x 240mm portrait, with 68 French folded leaves of Antalis McNaughton's Olin Regular High White 100gsm. The case of the book is lined in Cialux fabric from Italy. In addition to a debossed and two-colour foil blocked cover, there is a special saddlestitch pattern bookmark with matching head and tail bands.

The Mayfair apartments are at 4-5 Arlington Street, SW1, former home of prime minister Robert Walpole. Last week, the penthouse comfortably broke the Mayfair-St James selling price record for residential property, at over £4,500 per square foot.

Calverts is based in Tower Hamlets, one of the Olympic boroughs, so we were delighted with our home win on an 8-way pitch to design and print the Welcome Pack for Queen Elizabeth Olympic Business Park on behalf of The Olympic Park Legacy Company.

The brief was to create a format that would allow the pack to be updated and as saddle-stitching, perfectbinding and wiro-binding are all fixed bindings interscrew-binding was used to allow maximum flexibility on future updates.

To accomodate loose inserts the back cover was french-folded into the rivets then thumb-cut. A fold-out map, glued into the back cover, adds another interesting dimension to this eye-catching piece of print.

Fresh from our press is this beautiful book commissioned by The National Trust, in partnership with designer Dan Adams, artist Louise O'Reilly*, historian Sally Jefferey, and local homeless charity Spear.

Based on new research of the gardens at Ham House, and documents from the archives, the booklet takes a tour around the gardens at Ham House illustrating exotic plants known to have been grown in the 17th Century.

Rather than using a tinted paper such as Challenger Ivory, Munken, Olin or Redeem to give a period look and feel a smidgen of colourwash was added to the artwork, tinting the original white colour of the UPM fine paper.

* It's always nice to get good feedback on our work and artist Louise O'Reilly emailed us to say this about the Garden of Reason book:

"Dear Calverts, Thank you for doing a fantastic job on my artist's book about the gardens and Ham House. I have just opened the box and am delighted with the print quality and result. We have all had those experiences of paying for print and being a bit disappointed by the result, sometimes even very disappointed. So I always open print deliveries with some trepidation. But this delivery was a delight. At every stage you have delivered everything you promised and it is exactly what i wanted. Thank you so much."

We get a mention in Jess Baine's recent wiki on radical and community printshops…"the co-operative named 'Calverts' in honour of Giles and Elizabeth Calvert…". But who were Giles and Elizabeth Calvert?

Radical seventeenth century publishers during the English Civil war, purveyors of 'soul-poysons', members of the sect My One Flesh, imprisoned for printing books such as Richard Overton's The last warning to all the inhabitants of London and Lawrence Clarkson's ‘impious and blasphemous’ book A single eye – all light, no darkness, the Calverts operated from their print shop at the Sign of the Black Spread Eagle at the west end of St Paul's Churchyard in London, currently 54 Lombard Street.

Giles Calvert published Levellers', Diggers', Ranters', Quakers' and many other radical religious and political leaflets and suffered for it once governmental authority re-established itself. All of these publications would have stated their origins at the Black Spread Eagle so the association would have been made at that time with radicalism. His wife, Elizabeth Calvert, continued the work on a secret printing press after his death, and eventually the premises passed through several hands until it became the headquarters of what was to become Barclays Bank.

Calverts own Arthur in his new role with the Shangri Lads, who played an outstanding debut gig at Canning Town's prestigious Bridgehouse II club. Blending glam, punk and classic pub rythms, Arthur penned six new songs in the preceding weeks, including the instant classic 'Shoulda Woulda Coulda'.

We'd like to claim that Arthur's development of a cultural hinterland was due to Calverts encouraging its members to pursue self-realisation, in line with the fifth co-operative priciple, but the truth is he was pouting and posing on stage as a teenager in the early 80s. According to our female camp follower sources, there was rarely a dry seat in the house.
