Juniper scoop environmental award

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

London’s finest collectors and recyclers of food waste have won “Environmental Business of The Year” award for 2009 at The London Borough of Havering Awards.

Earlier this year Calverts worked with Juniper to develop a new brand identity for the fledgling social enterprise.

Naming a new business or product can be challenging but in this instance our client felt that the name ‘Juniper’ was counterintuitive yet worked in its descriptiveness and graphic potential.

A number of design options were presented and a suite of elements evolved; a palette of spot colours, watermarks, logos, illustrations and motifs which, together with the Juniper message that they get Food Waste Sorted, presents a consistent yet flexible visual identity.

We believe this works as well on business cards as it does on livery but we would value your opinion…

Your Personal Carbon Ration Book

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

Pics19Oct09 002Artist Clare Patey invites you to have a cup of tea and slice of cake with the Minister for Actually Doing Something About It, at next week’s Festival of Interdependence, hosted by the New Economics Foundation (nef).

‘It’ is climate threat, and the event kicks off at the London’s South Bank next Saturday, 24th October. You will receive your personal book of carbon ration stamps, which will show you how much you can ’spend’ on everything from the food you eat to how you travel – with suggestions for the many things you can do to your heart’s content.

The Ration Book was designed by Thomas Matthews and printed using surplus-to-requirements paper (various shades from the fabulous Colourset 100% post-consumer recycled range) and vegetable oil based litho inks in two pantone colours. Each page of ration coupons is perforated, and we turned round 2,000 copies in five days, including two rounds of inkjet proofing and artwork amendments, complex die making for the coupon perforations, repro, printing and binding. The format of the booklet – 24pp plus 4pp cover, 165mm x 115mm portrait – was specified to minimise paper waste and make optimal use of our B2 printing plates and Heidelberg 74F litho printing press.

Thomas Matthews are getting really good at this – we’ll be blogging soon about how they went about specifying paper and print for their new corporate identity collateral, by turning the usual print design process completely on its head.

Free Art not Frieze Art

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

freeartfairOrganised again by Jasper Joffe, the 2009 Free Art Fair (”the antidote to Frieze”) is on at the Barbican, and in our view it’s the best yet, with some truly great work on show until Sunday, when it will be … given away by raffle!

Calverts did the graphic reproduction and printing of the catalogue, and we duly enjoyed last Monday’s opening night party, where the Lemon Absolut went down a treat. In keeping with the spirit of Free Art Fair, our own Chris spent a couple of hours designing an ad and sponsorship message. Frightening to think what he might have come up with given a whole afternoon.

Abecederia by Blexbolex

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Nobrow_spreadEdited and published by NoBrow, the English language release of Paris-based illustrator Blexbolex’s uncanny graphic tale ‘Abecederia’ was printed and finshed at Calverts this week.

An alphabet book trapped in a detective story, ‘Abecederia’ is the twisted tale of two bank robbers on the run from the law (and from A to Z), who are forced into the depths of the jungles of Katagonia to a mysterious penal colony.

The book is designed and printed in three pantone colours, and employs tintlaying and overprinting technques to create an extraordinary palette and colour space. In our view, it’s the best example of imaginative design using spot colours since … NoBrow # 1: Gods and Monsters.

NoBrow have kindly agreed that we can give five of our file copies to the first people who ask. If you’d like to be one of them, contact us with your postal address.

Co-operatives proving resilient

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

A new report shows that co-operative enterprises around the world are proving resilient to the global economic crisis.
The report provides historical evidence and current empirical evidence that proves that the co-operative model of enterprise survives crisis, but more importantly that it is a sustainable form of enterprise able to withstand crisis, maintaining the livelihoods of the communities in which they operate.
